Euro steady above $1.31 after EU Summit

Tuesday 31st January 2012
EURUSD remained steady in the European trading session holding on to most gains made in the prior session after sentiment was boosted on news that the EU Summit on Monday resulted in striking a deal on a new 500 billion euro ESM rescue fund.
Investor concerns on the Greek debt crisis were also eased by assurances that an agreement on a second bailout for Greece will be reached by the end of the week
EURUSD hit a session high of 1.3212 but failed to extended higher as unemployment data show the euro zone jobless rate hit a 13-year high in December, at 10.4 percent. Also capping gains are concerns over Portuguese debt, as the country's bond yields are near euro-era highs.

Sterling hit a two-month high against the dollar lifted by improved sentiment as well as a weaker dollar helped. GBPUSD soared to 1.5794 from 1.5728, the highest since November 18. However further gains will be capped as the Bank of England is expected to introduce another round of quantitative easing in its next policy meeting later this month.

EURCHF fell to 1.2038, close to the four-month low and around the SNB 1.20 cap. The safe haven Swiss franc also remained strong against the dollar. USDCHF reached a two-month low of 0.9121 .

USDJPY took a pause from its sharp decline and is trapped in a 76.16/40 range and close to the October 31 low when the Bank of Japan intervened in the currency market.

Euro slips to 4-month low against Swiss franc

Monday 30th January 2012
Euro extended its decline against the dollar in the European trading session as uncertainty over the Greek debt situation dampened risk sentiment on Monday. The single currency is under pressure ahead of the EU Economic Summit due to start in Brussels, where the second Greek bailout package will be discussed.

Investors are nervous about the slow progress of the Greek debt restructuring talks. Meanwhile Portuguese borrowing costs hit record highs this morning, though a reasonably well received Italian bond auction helped give some support to the euro early in the session. EURUSD fell to a session low of 1.3090, off a six-week high reached on Friday at 1.3232, its decline accelerated after US personal consumption data.

Euro slipped against the Swiss franc to touch a four-month low as investors sold off the riskier single currency for the safe haven franc. EURCHF fell close to the SNB cap, touching 1.2041.This is the lowest since September 14, which was shortly after the 1.20 franc cap was put in place by the Swiss central bank on September 6. Meanwhile dollar gained to move off the December 2 low of 0.9113, as USDCHF rose to a session high of 0.9201.

Sterling gained versus a broadly weaker euro as Greece debt concerns weigh down. EURGBP fell to 0.8351 from 0.8396, moving off a one-month high hit on Friday of 84.08. However, the pound fell against the dollar, tracking falls in the euro versus the dollar, trimming gains made earlier in the session. GBPUSD touched lows of 1.1670.

The dollar held onto gains despite a report showing US personal spending unexpectedly dipped in December, though incomes rose more than some predicted.

Euro retreats as focus turns to EU Summit

Monday 30th January 2012
Euro trimmed some gains in the Asian trading session after climbing five days against the dollar. EURUSD retreated from a six-week high of 1.3232 after the strong rally last week prompted profit taking. EURUSD opened in Asia at 1.3226 and edged down to 1.3169.

Investors are being cautious until the outcome of the Greek debt negotiations which appear to be close to reaching a bond swap agreement with private creditors. Meanwhile market focus also turns to the EU Economic Summit in Brussels today where the eurozone debt crisis will be discussed.

The Australian dollar drifted lower on Monday, partly on profit-taking following last week's rally but also due to Fitch Ratings agency putting major Australian banks on negative rating watch. AUDUSD opened in Asia at 1.0637 and drifted lower to1.0568.

The Japanese yen gained back losses against the dollar and euro due to the damper risk appetite. EURJPY fell from 101.44 to 100.98 and USDJPY edged down to 76.64 from 76.78.
